Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

The Knights of Columbus have long championed the dignity and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One of the most visible and enduring efforts is the “Tootsie Roll Drive” — a charitable outreach with a simple symbol of appreciation: a piece of candy in exchange for a donation.

Florida councils enthusiastically participate in this time-honored tradition by standing outside grocery stores, places of worship, and community events to raise awareness and funds. All proceeds directly support programs and organizations that serve adults and children with intellectual disabilities across the state.

In 2024 alone, this campaign raised $537,310 across Florida, contributing to millions of dollars raised over the years to:

  • Support local group homes and day programs
  • Provide adaptive learning tools
  • Fund recreational and inclusion programs
  • Assist with Special Olympics Florida

This initiative is not just a fundraiser — it’s a ministry of visibility, compassion, and inclusion. Through every donation and every smile, the Knights of Columbus in Florida live out the Gospel call to serve those who are often overlooked by society.

When we serve those with intellectual disabilities, we encounter Christ in a profound way.
